I have just found this site and find it very helpful. I have been researching the Pick family of Barkby Thorpe.  Thomas Pick married Harriet Toone in 1868 and they had 14 children. Thomas was the School Master at Hoby and family recollections say that Harriet used to sing opera at the De Montfort Hall.

I have a lot of information about the Picks but would like any photographs of the family and /or school photographs.  I would be grateful for any help. Thank you.

Hi.

I have a piece of work by Elmer Keene which I got at a car boot sale seven years ago, and was wondering if you could tell me more about it.

It is of Conway Castle, framed, signed.  The paper on the back of the frame is falling apart. There is a faint stamp mark on it. I am frightened to take the paper off in case it damages it's worth (that is if it is worth anything).

I hope you can help.

There does seem to be considerable interest in the work of Elmer Ezra Keene, though there is little or no documentation available locally. I have asked the Leicester City Museums Service to provide further information about the Keene family of artists.

Hello.

I happened across your GREAT web site while looking for info on my family tree. Thank you for posting a picture of the church of St George.  My Great Great Great grandfather Edwin Goodwin (a weaver) was married in 1858 to Eliza Russell in that church by Theo Ratcliff.  Where might I find more family history and get more pictures of the church Hopefully the inside.

Thanks

I am looking for any information on John Goodall of Earl Shilton born around 1637 and married to a Sarah Roe (Rowe).  I think John's father was Sampson Goodall but not sure.  Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Stephen,

I am trying to find information on my grandfather THOMAS FAULKNER. He was born in Whitwick  circa 1868.  I have only been able to find this out via the 1901 census of Golbourne, Lancashire, where the entry shows that he was born in Whitwick, and also shows his wife, Ann, and my Uncles (John and Thomas) and also my father James.

Both my parents are now dead, also my uncles, so I am at the proverbial brick wall. I would greatly appreciate any information as I cannot at this time get to the Records Office to continue my research into my father's side of the family tree, and as it seems that I am the only one in the family that wishes to know of our heritage I must beg for assistance.

Thank you,

Martin Faulkner

I am looking for any information on the Towers hospital in Leicester (Gypsy Lane) please.

Hi
I'm working on behalf of Watch This Space we have been commissioned to create a short artistic film and a short soundscape for the opening of the LCB Depot in the St. George's area. I have found your web site really interesting and useful as I am trying to gather as much historical information on the Rutland street area. I would like to find out more information particularly on:

Rutland Street Operations Centre
St. George's Church
Businesses in  the area
Odeon Cinema

If you could point me in the right direction that would be great. Thanks for your help.

Dear Sir

There is a headstone for John Flower (1795-1861) at Welford Road Cemetery (Leicester, Leicestershire, England). This man could be my ancestor. Though I would not have any claim to property, I would like to prove or disprove this conjecture.

I am Michael L Flower (born in 1960 in California, USA) 8th child of Burton T Flower (born in 1921 in Arizona, USA) 2nd child of Joseph E Flower (born in 1896, Texas, USA and died 1962, Arizona, USA) child of Joseph E Flower(s) (born in ?1874? and died in 1945) who married Margaret E (Schulze) Flower(s) (born in 1874 and died in 1961, Texas, USA).

Could you help me verify either the truth or falsehood of this conjecture? My genealogy website is located at:

http://www.machdohvah.com/gen/index.html

I thank God for you,

Michael L Flower

Hello,

I am the great grand niece of Elmer Keene (Ezra Elmer Keene). He resided for many years, and died in Leicester. His son Percy is remembered at the Gilroes cemetery. I am wondering what happened to his other children; Frank, Dorothy, and Marjorie who were also artists?

I do have a significant amount of information on Elmer Keene if you need information on him. I also have collected many of his postcards along with Frank, Dorothy and Marjorie's? His sister is Minnie Keene, who also did pastels of animals that were made into postcards? Does anyone know what happened to Minnie?

Thank you so much,
Helen McAllister-Ross

I have asked the Leicester City Museums Service to provide further information about the Keene family of artists. In the meantime, any information you have would be gratefully received. Thank you for the offer.

I believe I have relatives buried at Welford Road.  I've read up on the cemetery and have realised it covers a lot of acres!  I am planning to take a trip to the cemetery sometime soon to search for family members graves and take photos, but I need to narrow the 'search area'.  Can anyone help me?

Good Evening,

I am currently exploring avenues of research into Leicester and my family - BALL.

However I have just one question - what hospitals would have been operational between 1915-1930 ? My great grandmother Sarah Ann Ball died in a Leicester hospital between these dates.

Thank you for your help,

Cheers

I am a market trader and was chatting to an elderly customer a few months ago who told me that he had been to the last hanging in Leicester. He said he had accompanied a friend to the execution of the convicted murderer of his young sister.

The crime was believed to have taken place in or around 1946 on the towpath by the boathouse in Aylestone, Leicester. The murderer had watched his intended victim, an elderly man who walked the same path at the same time each day, for some time before deciding to kill him. Unfortunately on that fateful day the old man did not appear but, having made up his mind to kill, the murderer killed the next person he saw walking on the towpath, a young girl on her way to the local primary school.

I have been trying to find further information on this murder but so far have been unsuccessful. If you have, or find, any info regarding this tragedy I'd be grateful to receive it.

Regards.

Jaycie

Dear Stephen,

Thank you for producing a most informative site.

Would it be possible to include more links to other sources of information?

For example, I would like to know who the Mayors of Leicester were from the first Mayor onwards and to find out about the evolution of their duties.

Regards,
Raphael Gillett

Hi,

We think our ancestors came from Syston, Leicestershire, England, but I have been running into a brick wall going back to England. Is there a place to check genealogy in your area that I can access on the web?

Thanks in advance,

John Walker

I am having no luck in finding my Great Grandfather's death and burial.

James Cleaver (1845) was born in St. Margaret's, Leicester (wife , Sarah Ann Smith). He was a Tailor in Leicester. He had sons, George (1877) Ironmonger, and Harry,(1885) Buses, daughters Flora (1882) -all born in Nottingham- and Gertie (1887) born in Leicester.

His brother is in Gilroes-1929-George Cleaver. He would have died between 1914-1930
He is not in Welford Road Cemetery. James had an older son, James(1872-Birmingham), who is my Grandfather, and ran away and came to Canada in 1891.

I have information on "Cleaver" families of Hinckley and Leicester-1800-to present day.
Anyone related can contact me.

John and Ann Cleaver had seven children:

William, Ann, Thomas, John, George, James, Charlotte

James married (1stly) Eliza.  James married (secondly) Sarah Ann Smith (had four children:)

I am researching a book for the British Lawnmower Museum in Southport.  I am looking for information on a Leicestershire company called JP (Jerram & Pearson) Ltd.  Can you tell me anything about this firm.  I am awaiting a check for the County Council archives, but I thought I would also give you a try.  If you could help in anyway I would be most grateful.  I am contactable at my personal email which is northwayl@hotmail.com or my mobile is 07800 803 486.  Any help you could give would be warmly received and I look forward to hearing from you.

Best Wishes

I am trying to trace any pictures or history into the beginnings of Bowlturners' Arms, Belgrave Gate, LEICESTER.  There does not appear to be a great deal of information on the place.

Thank you.

Hi,

A very homesick friend in Australia from Leicester has asked me to find a video called '2000 Years in Leicester' for her. Any ideas on where to obtain a copy would be most welcome.

Thanks,

Ken.

Hi,

I am interested in pupils who attended Wycliffe Secondary Modern School between 1955 and 1960. This school was originally part of a “social engineering” experiment – as was the whole of Braunstone Estate – But a definitive conclusion was never published. I would welcome advice on obtaining old school records or contact via email (jode@iafrica.com) of teachers and pupils.

Thanks.

Researching John (or maybe Jack) MARSTON 1894 and his wife Mary Potter in either Elm Street, Oak Street or Wharf Street.

Thank you,
