Chronicler was launched on 1 June 2004 and provides a focus on the
social history of the City of Leicester and the counties of
Leicestershire and Rutland. However, this website is not a history of battles and monarchs or of significant dates. It is a chronicle of the way individuals have played a part in the historical social development of this area. This website is a reflection of past thoughts and aspirations and of successes and failures. In particular I welcome contributions from local historians who would like to write about their particular field of research and interest. Full credit and copyright acknowledgement will be given for all contributed material, and I am happy to construct web pages and provide images to complement your work. |
| Latest I have just created a new feature titled Notes and Queries. This will eventually take the place of the existing Research Request pages. By including news, comments and images as well as emailed requests for information, I hope this new feature will be more attractive to the eye as well as useful to local historians. |
| Welcome
Welcome to the Administration area of Leicester Chronicler. In this area, new features are planned and developed, and new lines of research are mapped. Your involvement in this website is welcome, which is why this planning area is freely accessible to all visitors. Your comments, guidance and advice are always welcome. You can contact me by email here. Launch Date We launched on 1 June 2004. Some text and images were transferred from our earlier Leicester Research website. In February 2006 we moved our server hosting from London Canary Wharf to California, delivering a faster and more reliable service. An invitation to all
local websites Providing your website is relevant,
I promise to add it to our listings within 48 hours. As this is not a
commercial website, I will be pleased to draw the attention of our
visitors to your activities and products.
Research Pages are updated whenever
I receive a new query. You may be able to provide an answer to a
question or find an answer to yours. Due to the
popularity of our research area, visitors' messages and lines of
research now cover four pages. The index is here
I am currently converting all the old-format pages to the new format. The latest pages to have changed are Peck's View and Sam Torr's Hippodrome. I have also merged the former Welcome Page with this one. An example of the old format is the page on Richard III's whereabouts, which is, ironically, the oldest page on the site and one of the most frequently visited. ImagesAll images are my own unless otherwise stated. I have acknowledged the ownership and copyright of all pictures, maps and photographs. However, please do NOT assume that you are free to copy them simply because they appear on this website. Please email me if you would like to use any image - I won't charge, but I would appreciate the courtesy. I keep all images below a file size of 54Kb. A few years ago, this would have been unacceptably large, given the speed of modems at the time; however, with the increase in Broadband take-up, I have opted for higher quality. Where there are many images on one page, I have tried to keep the file sizes down. Statistics In terms of this website's activity, we received 38096 page impressions in November, which was the highest monthly figure to date. On Monday 4 December 2006 this website recorded its busiest ever day with 1747 page impressions in 24 hours.Policy You can be assured that this is a totally `clean' site, in that no tracking cookies or any other `nasties' You will not receive any emails from us (unless you write to me and ask for a reply), and no data is obtained as a result of you accessing this website. The only statistics we maintain relate to the number of visits to each of our pages, with dates and times, and a breakdown of the country of origin of each visit. We can also see search words and terms entered into search engines that have referred you to this website. Our software is able to record the keywords and phrases you used to reach this website. These can be very helpful in directing the future development of Leicester Chronicler, but it would help us even more if visitors could email me to explain their specific interests. I will do my best to tailor this website accordingly. Please feel free to return to this page, as this is where new projects, ideas and features will begin. Site Structure I have opted for a very simple website structure to enable easy navigation. There is a link to every individual page from the Index Page except: Leicester's Artists - This links to a further index page from which there are pages for seven different local artists Research Requests - This links to the most recent Research Request emails, but there are links on this page to a further three pages of earlier messages At the bottom of every page is a link back to the Home Page. This is identical in content to the Index Page, but is a page in its own right. This enables me to understand the usage statistics of the site more clearly. There are 76 pages in total on the site.
