George Moore Henton is now regarded as one of England's foremost landscape painters. He was born at 64 Regent Road, Leicester, his father, George, being the manager at Paget's Bank in Leicester. His father had been born at Ragdale (in 1834) and died at Bank House in Leicester in 1888. His mother was Sarah Pank (1829-1913.
Henton was educated at Mill House School, London Road, and gained his first artistic training from Wilmot Pilsbury, the first principal of the Leicester School of Art.
Henton had little empathy with modernist schools of painting. He chose to make precise reproductions of his subject. His great skill lay in the portrayal of buildings. His desire for architectural detail is a particular hallmark of his work.
His first exhibition at the Royal Academy opened in 1884.
Henton was also a fine photographer. He left a remarkable photographic record of Leicester and Leicestershire.
